NSA: Specifications & Format 

The National Spanish Assessments measure Interpretive Communication and Comprehension. 

The National Spanish Assessments (NSA) are a proficiency-based online exam designed to give teachers many different options and results for testing students.

The student is given (1) a context in English, (2) an authentic spoken passage in Spanish and (3) a question based on one of the learner outcomes below and then followed by four answer choices.  They learner outcomes increase in difficultly as the student progresses to higher levels. 


Module 1 - READING (12 questions)

The National Spanish Assessments measure Interpretive Communication in Reading Comprehension. The student is given (1) a context in English, (2) an authentic passage in Spanish and (3) a question based on one of the learner outcomes below and then followed by four answer choices. The specific learner outcomes tested for all levels are as follows:

Given an authentic written passage in Spanish, the learner will correctly:
1.  Identify the main ideas
2.  Identify supporting details
3.  Make an inference

Module 2 - LISTENING (12 questions)

The National Spanish Assessments measure Interpretive Communication in Listening Comprehension.  The student is given (1) a context in English, (2) an authentic spoken passage in Spanish and (3) a question based on one of the learner outcomes below and then followed by four answer choices. The specific learner outcomes tested for all levels are as follows:

Given an authentic spoken passage in Spanish, the learner will correctly:
1.  Identify the main ideas

Module 3 – VOCABULARY (40 questions)

The specifications for vocabulary on the National Spanish Assessments are the same as the specifications on the National Spanish Examinations.


Module 4 – GRAMMAR (40 questions)

The specifications for grammar on the National Spanish Assessments are the same as the specifications on the National Spanish Examinations.
